- In March 2019, Indiana's Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV) appear that gender-neutral markers on driver'due south licenses would become bachelor in October 2019. All the same, in September 2019, the land's attorney full general blocked this selection , and in March 2020 issued an official opinion preventing gender-neutral options from ever being allowed unless the state passes legislation explicitly permitting them.

Nascence document laws govern the procedure by which a country changes (or refuses to change) a gender marker on a person'southward birth certificate. --Montana's 2021 law requires a court order and proof of surgery earlier granting an updated birth certificate, but in Apr 2022, a
court issued  a temporary injunction of the police, ordering the country to revert to its previous (good) procedure. In May 2022, yet, the country department of wellness issued an "emergency order" banning whatever changes under any circumstances, in defiance of the court order.  This map will be updated as the example progresses.
--Oklahoma has issued  at least 1 nonbinary marker on a nascence document (Oct 2021), but the state's Governor so issued Executive Society 2021-24 (November 2021) to forbid such options and to forbid whatsoever gender marker changes at all.  In April 2022, the land passed a police, the first of its kind in the country, banning the use of an "X" marker or anything other than male or female.
--Vermont
passed a police  in Apr 2022  simplifying the procedure to update birth certificates, and adding the selection of an "Ten" marker. This law goes into effect July 1, 2022.
--West Virginia'south state code clearly lays out a process for correcting nascency certificates, merely a 2020 court ruling is currently preventing people from updating the gender marking on their nascency certificate. The ACLU of W Virginia is
suing  to restore this correct. We will update this map equally the case progresses.

Many transgender people change their legal name to better reflect their gender identity. While state laws generally allow individuals to alter their legal name for any non-criminal purpose, many states yet accept outdated and burdensome requirements that create substantial barriers to achieving a legal proper noun change. One of the almost common and problematic requirements is that a person must publicly post or publish their legal name change request, often in a local newspaper. This non only poses a fiscal obstacle (as the publication typically must exist paid for), but besides puts the person at risk of potential impairment, harassment, or discrimination. Another pregnant barrier is that many states have additional rules and restrictions on name changes for people who have a criminal record.
